“I’m not worthy…”
At breakfast recently, we sisters were discussing how often this apparently-humble phrase twists itself into preventing someone from doing God’s will. If you have fallen prey to this temptation, though, take courage; you’re not the only one! Many, even myself, have experienced it one time or another, whether in the overwhelming recognition of “THE CALL” to a particular religious order, or in recognizing God’s presence in the tabernacle so much that we fear coming too close, or when God is calling us out of our comfort zones…Yes, it’s a temptation: because very often, if not every time, when this thought has taken root, we attempt to make excuses to avoid doing God’s will. Let’s look at some given examples in the Bible that are still very relatable to this day:
Jeremiah – “I do not know how to speak. I am too young!” (Jer. 1:4-10)
Moses – “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt? …
I have never been eloquent… I am slow of speech and tongue.” (Ex. 3-4)
Gideon – “My family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the most insignificant in my father’s house.” (Judg. 6:11-24)
Despite these characters’ objections, however, the Lord gave each of them the strength and grace to carry out their mission – as He will do for us! As a sister pointed out during our discussion, St. Paul writes to the Colossians, “By the might of his glory you will be endowed with the strength needed…, giving thanks to the Father for having made you WORTHY to share the lot of the saints in light!” (Col. 1:9-12).
